Berkhamsted Castle

Wander the ruins of this former motte-and-bailey castle, built between the 11th and 13th centuries. Read all about the history of the castle and its role as a former fortress, the attack and siege of Prince Louis of France and the developments under the former owners from Richard, Earl of Cromwell to Edward, the Black Prince.

Guided tours are provided throughout the year and on request for schools and other groups. These can also be combined with guided tours of some of the historic sites in the town centre.

Admission is free but donations are suggested for guided tours.

Opening Times

Open daily from 10:00 – 18:00

The Visitor Room is open Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays.
