Berkhamsted Castle

2. Berkhamsted Castle, Berkhamsted

Did you know that Berkhamsted Castle was first built in the late 11th century?

You can learn much more about this site by visiting Berkhamsted Castle. You can wander the ruins of this former motte-and-bailey castle, read all about the history of the castle including its role as a former fortress.

Guided tours are provided throughout the year and on request for schools and other groups. These can also be combined with guided tours of some of the historic sites in the town centre.

Admission is free but donations are suggested for guided tours.

3. The Court Theatre, Tring

Are you wanting to see a new and difference performance?

The Court Theatre is a brilliant venue to do just this! There is something for everyone from full scale musicals to one person shows.

The David Evans Court Theatre was originally established as The Pendley Arts Centre this versatile modern auditorium is housed in a converted ‘French barn’ which dates back exactly 100 years from the date the theatre first opened in 1978.

4. Piccotts End Wall Paintings, Hemel Hempstead

History can be found all over Dacorum even where you would least expect it!

Within a Grade I Listed 15th Century cottage at Piccotts End, is a series of unique and historic wall paintings whose fascinating story lay hidden for over five hundred years.

Seven colourful panels with religious themes still exist, more than 500 years since they were first painted. The artists are unknown, as are the reasons for their existence.

5. The Rex, Berkhamsted

Are looking for a glamourous place to see some movie magic?

The Rex is a cinema with an art-deco style with comfortable, generous seating and a choice from over 30 films a month including the latest blockbusters. For the adults there is a bar on site which also serves snacks, and there are also regular child-friendly screenings for those smaller, noisier film buffs!

6. Tring Local History Museum, Tring

The Tring area is filled with history and the best place to experience all of this is Tring local history museum.

Located in a historic market auction office built in 1893, the museum reflects all aspects of life in and around Tring from the earliest days until the recent past, and records events, objects and the people who lived there.

7. The Old Town Hall Theatre, Hemel Hempstead

Whether it is a night out with friends or something for all the family, The Old Town Hall has it all!

Proudly standing in the heart of Hemel Hempstead’s Old Town High Street since 1852, The Old Town Hall has been a buzzing arts space since 1978. Famous names who have performed here include Eddie Izzard, Steve Coogan, Jo Brand and many more.

8. Bridgewater Monument, Ashridge Estate

Did you know, on clear days, it is possible to see as far as Canary Wharf from the top of the Bridgewater Monument?

Bridgewater Monument was built in memory of the third Duke of Bridgewater who once lived in Ashridge House. The Monument is open weekends from April to October when you can climb the 172 steps to the top. From the top you will have views of the Ashridge Estate.

After climbing to the top of the monument you can explore and learn about the rest of the Ashridge Estate through one of the waymarked walks.

9. Natural History Museum, Tring

Are you looking for a fun way to teach your children about the natural world?

The Natural History Museum at Tring was built in 1889 to house the incredible collections of Walter Rothschild. A keen zoologist and an eccentric, determined character, upon his death the building and collection were gifted to the nation and became part of the Natural History Museum.

Today, while much of the interior retains its Victorian charm, the Museum runs with a full programme of inspiring exhibitions and events for families and adults.

10. St Peter’s Church, Berkhamsted
