Chilterns Heritage & Culture Festival
The 7th Chilterns Heritage & Culture Festival takes place from Thursday 12th September to Sunday 29th September, 2024.
They have walks, talks and exclusive tours showcasing the rich and diverse heritage and culture which has shaped and continues to shape this ever-changing region. Explore new places or discover a new side of old favourites. The programme includes:
Guided Tour of Berkhamsted Castle, Monday 16 September. £10 pp Enjoy a guided tour of this much-loved Norman motte and bailey castle. Hear about its fascinating history and all those who resided there until the late 15th century.
Hemel Hempstead Old Town Walk, Monday 23 September. £7.50 pp Join for a historic tour of Gadebridge Park and Hemel Hempstead Old Town where the buildings have retained the atmosphere of a pre 1960s High Street.

Dens Castle Walk
Join Dens for a lovely community day for a 10-mile or 2-mile walk that will take you along the canal, across beautiful Chiltern countryside with stunning panoramic views, passing historic buildings and picturesque villages on Saturday 14th September starting at Berkhamsted Castle. The gentle family and dog-friendly 2-mile walk goes along the Grand Union Canal and includes a children’s nature quiz, perfect for families- and four legged friends are welcome!
After, experience fun activities, castle tours, raffle and refreshments within the Castle grounds.
All funds raised through the walk have helped to fund DENS’ integrated services including their 44-bed Hostel, Day Centre and Foodbank. This year, with your help, DENS want to raise even more to continue helping to rebuild the lives of local people in Dacorum, as well as highlight the issues that homeless people face.

Frogmore Paper Mill Talks Programme
If you are interested in the Gade Valley area, maybe as a resident or as a former paper mill worker, or even as someone interested in local history, this is a programme for you. We have invited a number of extremely knowledgeable historians to speak on their areas of expertise. If you thought Hemel Hempstead had no history, or you knew everything about the local paper industry, we guarantee you are wrong! Your ticket will cover the talk, a fish and chip supper, tea and coffee.
The Arrival of the Railways in West Hertfordshire – Michael Stanyon. London to Birmingham, Apsley Station and the Croxley Paper Mill internal rail system. – Friday 6th September, 7-9.30pm.
Idle Women and the Grand Union Canal – Brian Hill. The Land Girls of WW2, the Idle Women were trained to operate the narrowboats. Learn all about them in this presentation. Friday 18th October, 7-9.30pm
The Fire Service in Britain- Peter Hailes and Paul Sturman. The history of the fire service in Britain, from Roman times to the present day. Factual and anecdotal presentation by two former paper mill firemen and members of the Frogmore Paper Mill Heritage Fire Brigade – Friday 15th November, 7-9.30pm.

A1 SUP Hire, a local family run business offer weekly Cold Water Swimming and SUP Yoga at Hemel Hempstead Leisure Centre.
SUP Yoga sessions available Mondays 1pm-1.30pm & 1.30pm-2.00pm and Fridays 6.30pm-7pm & 7pm-7.30.
Cold water swimming sessions Wednesdays 10am-10.30am & 10.30am-11.00am and Sundays 12pm-12.30pm & 12.30pm- 1.00pm. Cold-water swimming is a proven and exhilarating way to clear your mind, rejuvenate your spirit and increases endurance.
